Infamous Architect Practice Zaha Hadid Architects have released renders for the new Port Headquarters in Antwerp. Zaha Hadid has always been a controversial architect with her unusual designs. In the architect world her work has been likened to “marmite”, you either love it or you hate it. These new designs just released are a step away from her usual organic forms, yet retain her signature style, modern and simplistic.

Its pretty obvious she has drawn inspiration from the hull of a boat, creating a form which protrudes from the original refurbished fire station. In the past Hadid has been accused of being extremely overrated – people claim that all her work looks the same and also that the work she does doesn’t suit the surroundings they’re built in. I feel these new designs maybe are in direct response to these accusations, drawing inspiration from a key theme (boat, port etc) and by moving away from the normal organic inspirations.

I personally love this new piece as I’ve always enjoyed the combination of old buildings with new modern styles. I do think that the designs are very unusual, and for some maybe a step too far, but when taking into consideration this building will be situated in Antwerp, a city renown for quirky and unusual architecture, I feel it will fit perfectly.

What do you guys think of her new work? Do you feel the criticism levelled at Hadid is justified, or that people are being far too critical? Let us know by dropping us a message here or on our facebook.
