I can’t count the number of times that I have heard people talk about this season’s affection for the classic and the beautiful. Every page I turn in every magazine feature waif-like girls in long floral skirts, classic beauties wearing swooshing swing dresses, and long legged girls in the kind of countryside knee high boots that even Zara Phillips would approve of.
After months of tweeds filtering into the shops and warm velvet jackets in all the lookbooks, I have finally faced up to the fact that, unless I want to wear my old clothes for an entire season, I am going to have to get thoroughly behind the ladylike trend. The clothes are easy enough, but the elegant and faintly rural trend extends into makeup too. So, what beauty trends are there for this look?
Rosy cheeks are a stand out look. Imagine that you have been walking on a crisp autumn day, and you will get the gist. It is all about rosy pinks, flushed stains, and a cool pale skin tone underneath. What with the lack of sunshine you aren’t meant to look bronzed and sun-blushed – instead, channel a slight vampire vibe and look pale and interesting with a cheekbone-defining flush of colour.
When you are done with the slightly-sickly-but-stylish skin tone, move onto the lips. I love this particular part of the trend, as it calls for deep purple lips, intense stains, and generally the sort of sexy style that is easy to do, but which looks like you spent hours on it. Makes a nice change from makeup that looks like you aren’t wearing anything, but which too years to apply! Wear gorgeous mauve colours, and don’t be afraid to go as dark as you dare.
The eyes for this classic ladylike look are simple. In fact, one could call them classic! Simply keep the lids matte with a primer and powder, and then add some mascara and a sweep of defining eyebrow pencil. You can make things dewier if you want, and slick a little Vaseline over the lid and even the lashes. Simples!
What do you think of this trend? How dark would you go?
