Last week I talked about the ladylike country looks strutting their stuff on the catwalk. This week, however, we are looking at something quite different, the trend towards lace and leather that looks set to carry on well into the winter months. Despite the fact that Winter = Freezing cold, it seems that fabric with holes in it is set to become de rigueur , and we can all raise our hands to the heavens and give an almighty Hallelujah for the addition of warm wind resistant leather to the mix. It’s biker chick meets pure and innocent, a strange mix of girly and androgynous that really needs to be paid homage to in your beauty choices.
So, how do you work the make-up that accompanies this A/W trend?
Firstly, start with the eyes. Put understated sophistication out of your mind, and instead channel Cheryl Cole or Amy Winehouse. These are girls with attitude, and that shows in their cosmetic choices. You know what I mean – they tend to cake their eyes in thick liner, charcoal blacks, and metallic greys. Eyelashes aren’t enough on their own for this look – it has to be a matter of risking eye strain by layering on heavy lashes and super lengthening mascara. The stand out look is all about kohl lines shaping the eye, retro flicks and heavy lids. You know, the way you can look after a heavy night out without taking your makeup off, just a lot cooler.
Because of the heaviness of the eye make-up in this beauty trend, you probably don’t want to over do the lips. Instead, aim for a subtle sheen and sexy pale pink shade that leaves you eyes to do the talking for once. For a sexier pout, load on the clear or pink lip gloss, with a plumping dab of a darker colour in the centre. Perfectly kissable!
Finally, you need to pay attention to your skin. Smooth it with a primer and foundation, because pulling off the lace and leather look without being trashy requires a really put-together style. Although dramatic, everything needs to be neat, elegant and smooth. Remember this when getting ready on a night out, and you should be fine!
